Have students examine the philosophical differences between the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: Good students will immediately point out that the Knights were opposed to the wage system and the capitalist system. This is reflected in their call for the formation of cooperatives. In the process, the Knights were inclusive because they advocated organizing everyone working for wages. In contrast, the American Federation of Labor sought to organize only the skilled while accepting the capitalist system as a permanent fixture of American society. Better students will relate that its limited goals and more narrow focus allowed it to survive, while the Knights faded into oblivion.
