Discuss the pros and cons of a law that would require landlords to warn existing tenants of any new tenant who had a criminal record involving a violent or sex related felony
Pros:
Tenants are entitled to the same safety as owners of homes. Criminals are more likely to be renters than owners, and thus tenants are at more risk and thus require more protection. Apartments are not built to offer the same kinds of protection as homes (i.e., alarm systems, entryway lighting, neighborhood watch programs, parking restrictions on transient cars, etc.).
Cons:
Landlords are not police. Notification about criminals would cause tenants to move, and thus landlords would be penalized unfairly. Criminals have paid their dues to society are entitled to be left alone. What happened to their rights of privacy? Where are ex-convicts supposed to live?
