A supercontinent consists of at least two continents merged into one, and we usually refer to a
supercontinent as a one composed of all or most of Earth’s landmasses. Two supercontinents
existed in the Proterozoic: Rodinia assembled between 1.3 and 1.0 billion years ago, and
fragmented 750 million years ago. The continents reassembled 650 million years ago into
another supercontinent, Pannotia. This began fragmenting 550 million years ago, near the end of
the Proterozoic
