Discuss the conditions under which praise can enhance or diminish intrinsic motivation, and explain individual and developmental differences in the effectiveness of praise.
What will be an ideal response?
The answer should indicate that praise enhances motivation when sincere, unexpected, and providing feedback, but it diminishes when given for easy tasks or conveyed in an insincere or controlling manner. It should also recognize praise as more beneficial in the middle elementary grades—with lower-achieving students, with lower SES students, with males, and with those with an external locus of control.
