How are children affected by divorce? What circumstances impact these effects?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Children with divorced parents tend to have poorer academic performance, lower self-esteem, and more mental health and disciplinary problems than children from intact families. The effects of these events tend to be modest because children are remarkably resilient, especially when they have family and economic resources to help them work through tough times. Some children actually fare better after their parents' divorces. Research shows most children experience no negative effects from divorce. About a quarter of children experience negative effects, such as decreased school performance or externalizing problems. A small percentage experience positive effects following divorce because the conflict in their family decreases. Sociologists see multiple transitions as more detrimental than a single event.
