Nativists are extremist immigration opponents who go beyond advocating immigration policy and actually harass or confront immigrants. The Southern Policy Law Center estimates an 80% increase in these groups, which include various factions of the Minuteman Project and Federal Immigration Reform and Enforcement (FIRE) Coalition. In 2009, Minuteman American Defense members in Arizona were accused of shooting and killing a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter. These groups are also known for staging protests, propagating conspiracy theories (such as the Obama citizenship theory), and acting as vigilantes in immigration issues.
