The hinge joint is more stable than a ball-and-socket joint since it is a uniaxial joint that operates only in one plane. The elbow and knee are examples of hinge joints. Ball-and-socket joints are multiaxial and allow movement in all three planes. The greater the mobility, as seen in the ball-and-socket joint, the less stable the joint. The shoulder and hip joints are examples of ball-and-socket joints.
