After 9/11 the U.S. engaged in many counterterrorism initiatives. What are some of these and why are they controversial?
What will be an ideal response?
1. The Patriot Act gives the government enhanced permission to monitor the communications and data of anyone suspected to be involved in a terrorist group. Critics argue this monitoring was used inappropriately to profile citizens and infringes on civil liberties.
2. Guantanamo Bay was established. Critics claim this off-shore terrorist prison was not run according the rule of law and was intentionally placed off-shore to skirt human rights standards related to prisoners in the U.S.
3. Made waterboarding legal. A widely debated interrogation method many argue is inhumane.
4. Military Commissions Act established ability for terrorists to be tried in non-public military courts for security reasons. Debate ensues around whether or not these are necessary.
