How do stimulant medications work in treating ADHD?

Methylphenidate, a dopamine agonist, is used to treat ADHD. This medication increases the activity of dopamine, helping to regulate the brain of a person with ADHD. Although it seems odd that a "stimulant" would be used, it is stimulating an area of the brain that is underactive.
