During the early childhood years, art should focus on process rather than product. Explain what this means and why this is an appropriate focus during children’s early years. Include an example of an art activity that demonstrates the importance of the process rather than the product

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary.
During the early years it is essential that art activities be of interest to the children and the activity invites their participation. The teacher builds confidence and appreciation of their artistic work through appropriate activities. There should not be concern about a “cute” product or a perfect picture. As the young child creates the picture, the creation is constantly changing. Children are engaged in watching the colors, the change of shape, and the visual things that occur. For example, when a child is painting on an easel he or she will often continue adding color until the entire sheet of drawing paper is brown. There is no concern for the final product (the all brown painting) but rather their participation in the art project is what the child finds important.
