Compare and contrast internal transportation as conducted by an open and closed circulatory system. Also, identify

two animals representative of each type of circulatory system. What will be an ideal response?

Open and closed circulatory systems each provide a mechanism for the internal transport of
materials through the animal body. In open circulatory systems (found in arthropods and
most mollusks), the heart pumps blood (specifically hemolymph) into vessels that have open ends. The hemolymph spills into cavities collectively called the hemocoel. In the hemocoel
the hemolymph bathes the cells and then re-enters the circulatory system through openings in
the heart or through opened-ended vessels. In closed circulatory systems (found in annelids,
echinoderms, and vertebrates), the blood flows through a continuous system of vessels; a
hemocoel is absent. Nutrients, gases, and wastes leave the vessels through thin-walled
capillaries.
