The most common treatment for heroin addiction is to maintain addicts on methadone, which is an addictive synthetic drug similar to opium. Methadone does not provide the euphoric rush of heroin, but it does prevent withdrawal symptoms that can truly be unbearable.

Addiction is increasingly viewed as a medical problem as understanding of the changes addiction produces in the brain become better understood.
