Define the term emergent properties and give an example from a natural system

What will be an ideal response?

Emergent properties are characteristics of a system that are not evident in the system's components (the whole is greater than the sum of its parts). The component parts of a tree (leaves, branches, roots, bole) do not lead to the whole tree's emergent properties as a source of shade for understory vegetation, a home for birds and insects, a rich resource filled with nectar and pollen during flowering season, and/or a source of food for many organisms in the form of fruits or nuts.
