Explain how assumptions held by either the speaker or the listener can cause breakdowns in communication

Sometimes we assume that another person knows how we feel or what we are thinking even though we have not communicated our thoughts and feelings verbally. On the other hand, we may assume that we know what another person thinks and feels. In either case, our assumptions may be incorrect; one person may be totally unaware of what the other person is thinking or feeling.
