Describe the process of mastery learning or mastery training instruction
What will be an ideal response?
In mastery learning, teachers frequently assess students' mastery of content to decide if it is time to move on to the next concept or activity. They offer more instruction to those students who do not show mastery, but move the curriculum along for those who do. This makes it possible for all students to master content material, even if they do so at different rates. To monitor students' progress towards mastery, teachers should do the following: 1) Ask questions of the whole class. This can be done by asking for a show of hands, but is increasingly being done with technological devices that allow each child to anonymously and simultaneously respond. If too many students have not mastered the content, the teacher knows not to move forward in the curriculum. 2) Teachers should use a cooperative learning strategy like "thin-pair-share" in which small groups are created, students are asked to think about a question, those with disabilities are paired with non-disabled peers, and each is asked to share their response with the group.
