What are two-spirit people?

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Students should discuss that Native American communities believed that the Great Creator made everything, including two-spirit people. They were thought to have the qualities and skills of both women and men and thus were uniquely sacred. This gender status gave them a unique role in their communities for which they received appreciation and respect. Mythology and religious beliefs encouraged acceptance of two-spirit people. In contemporary language, we could say that Native Americans accepted gender fluidity. Someone could choose their gender based on a dream or their perceived skills rather than having to be the gender that matched a certain kind of anatomy.
