In at least three paragraphs, discuss why there is no simple answer to the question “What is, or is not, ethical research practice?”

What will be an ideal response?

Avoid harming research participants--difficult to interpret in specific cases and harder to define in a way agreeable to all social scientists; does it mean that subjects should not be harmed psychologically as well as physically at all?; obtain informed consent--consent must be given by the persons who are competent to consent; researchers' actions and body language should help convey his verbal assurance; consent must be clear and understandable yet sufficiently long and detailed to explain what will actually happen; deception is a critical component of many social psychology experiments in part because of the difficulty of simulating real-world stress and dilemmas in a laboratory setting; Milgram's (1964) study used deception because subjects could not be permitted to administer real electric shocks and it did not make sense to order the subjects to do something that they didn't find to be so troubling; maintain privacy and confidentiality--laws allow research records to be subpoenaed and may require reporting child abuse; a researcher may feel compelled to release information if a health- or life-threatening situation arises and participants need to be alerted.
