Describe the purpose and operation of the engine thermostat.

What will be an ideal response?

The thermostat controls engine temperature by controlling the flow of coolant from the engine to the radiator. When the engine is cold, the thermostat is closed. The closed thermostat prevents coolant flow to the radiator and provides for a faster warm-up of the engine. The thermostat begins to open when the coolant in the engine reaches a specific temperature. This allows some coolant flow through the radiator. The thermostat will open wider as the engine heats up to increase coolant flow and maintain engine temperature without overheating.
