Interrogators were authorized by officials in the Bush administration to use various coercive techniques; the most controversial involved “round the clock” interrogations, stress positions, the use of dogs, isolation for up to 30 days, and sensory deprivation. Even more coercive techniques could be employed with the approval of high-ranking government officials. These practices included threats of violence, pushing and shoving, and “exposure to cold weather or water.” The use of water refers to waterboarding, which entails pouring water over an individual’s face to simulate drowning. A number of these techniques were employed in combination with one another, along with other measures such as the continual playing of loud music. In some cases, suspected members of al-Qaeda were subjected to extraordinary rendition.
