How does a person develop dissociative identity disorder?

What will be an ideal response?

Suggested response:
? Most commonly, it is a child who develops dissociative identity disorder (or
DID) very early in life as an attempt to cope with overwhelming
circumstances;
? Generally these circumstances are severe abuse, both physical or sexual,
severe neglect from the primary caretaker; as well, painful and intrusive
medical procedures in early childhood can also be a contributor;
? DID serves as a way for the child to block out these painful physical and
emotional experiences, survive those experiences, and stay connected to the
adults that they depend on to meet their basic needs;
? DID also serves to help the individual to function without suffering from the
memories of abuse or feeling betrayed by his or her parents.
