`Describe what sensory losses accompany old age. Which do you personally think the most challenging loss would be in terms of day to day function?
What will be an ideal response?
Losses in vision, taste, smell, touch and hearing may all impact the ways in which a person negotiates his/her environment and social relationships. Changes in vision may make reading instructions or warning signs more difficult, or perceiving curbs on sidewalks, taste and smell could lead to ingesting spoiled food or having less interest in eating; loss of sensitivity in touch could mean handling hot items and causing burns to the skin and smell could lead to lack of ability to smell fires that may be caused by household appliances. It is a personal choice in terms of which loss would create the most difficulty - perhaps this is dependent on the person’s usual activities.
