Describe the process of guided reading. Why is it a valuable strategy to use to support emergent literacy?

What will be an ideal response?

Teachers use guided reading lessons with small groups of four to six children who read at the same level. They use books written at children's instructional level and support children's use of reading strategies. Children do the actual reading themselves, although the reader often reads the first page aloud to get the group off to a successful start. Components of a guided reading lesson include:
1. Children read a familiar book they've already read during the previous lessons.
2. Teachers introduce a new book and guide children as they read it.
3. Teachers take children on a "walk" through the book and talk about the illustrations and the text.
4. Children read the entire book, with the teacher providing assistance.
5. Once everyone in the group has finished reading, the children briefly talk about the book.
6. Teachers use words from the text to teach and practice phonic skills, new vocabulary words, and reading strategies.
7. Sometimes children extend the reading experience through writing.
