Discuss a number of areas of dissent
What will be an ideal response?
In the United States, dissent can be said to occur in at least five major areas. One type of dissent is political dissent which is concerned primarily with effecting change in political policy. Examples of nonviolent political dissent include past demonstrations against the Vietnam War and those in favor of civil rights. Social dissent in the United States was pioneered by Martin Luther King, Jr. who used nonviolent protests as a means of drawing attention to inequitable treatment of African-Americans. Economic dissent is concerned primarily with effecting change in the economy and meeting material needs. Protests regarding unfair labor practices may be considered economic dissent. Religious dissent is concerned primarily with bringing changes in the definition of religious freedom. For example, much antiabortion dissent is couched in a religious context. Environmental dissent is concerned with effecting change in the surroundings in which we live. Opposition to the wearing of animal furs would be an example of environmental dissent. Hence, it is obvious that the United States has a history of dissent in many different areas.
