What is the value of schools using noncategorical descriptions or labels when serving young children with special needs?
What will be an ideal response?
Many professionals believe that the use of a categorical disability label can unfairly stigmatize a child and create a self-fulfilling prophecy, where the label can lead to particular beliefs or expectations of a child, which then manifests or become realized due to these beliefs and expectations. The value of using noncategorical descriptions, then, is that it avoids such stigmatizing beliefs and behaviors and disrupts potential self-fulfilling prophecies.
