Describe the NEA and the AFT. Explain the controversies and benefits associated with joining a teacher's union
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Both the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers are labor unions that represent people in the field of education. The NEA is larger, and the AFT is older, but both have wide political influence. Both provide legal services and collective bargaining representation. In addition, they serve as a networking and professional development resource for educators. On the negative side, some argue that unions victimize the people teachers serve—students. Additionally, their collective bargaining efforts and resulting contracts can make school reform difficult. Advocates suggest that because teachers are paid less than other professionals, they need union representation to secure proper working conditions and pay.
