Many believe that past and current discrimination against women and minorities require the enactment and implementation of affirmative action policies and programs. Critics of affirmative action, however, note that many women and minority members come from more privileged circumstances than do many white males. Would it be better, then, to use social class as a basis for affirmative action programs? If this were to be done, how would social class be defined? Is it simply a matter of income and wealth?
