Menarche, the age of onset of menstruation in females, typically occurs around the age of 12 years, but varies by ethnicity and country of origin. Early menses, menstrual periods, are typically associated with anovulatory cycles or cycles that do not produce an egg and therefore, are not capable of resulting in pregnancy. Onset of ovulation is related to the onset of menarche. When menarche occurs before 12 years of age, onset of ovulatory cycles, or menstrual cycles that do produce a viable egg capable of being fertilized by a viable sperm and resulting in pregnancy, occur within one year of the first menstrual period in 50% of females. By contrast, in young girls who begin menstruating after the age of 12 years, fully ovulatory cycles may not occur until 8-12 years later.
