Explain how extractive institutions limit economic development.

What will be an ideal response?

Expropriation of property, grand and petty corruption and rent seeking stifles innovation and creative destruction. If people are not confident that their property rights will be upheld they tend to not invest in the economy. If state funds are used for cronyism, clientism or nepotism there is a tendency to halt creative destruction and in some cases the inability to provide quality goods and services. Finally rent seeking only benefits the few powerful political leaders and the majority of people in an economy do not see any gains in development.
