What are several common sexually transmitted diseases? How would conservatives and liberals understand the causes of these diseases? What policies would each political viewpoint support as a solution to the problem of STDs?

What is an Ideal response?

• There are more than fifty STDs, including gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, and AIDS.
• Conservatives believe the solution is families—preferably with two active, involved parents—who must teach children traditional virtues, such as personal responsibility in matters of sexuality. To the extent that they do, problems such as teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases will decline.
• Liberals believe that the problem is not sex itself, but rather a lack of understanding about how to have "safe sex." For that reason, liberals favor solutions such as sex education and wide availability of condoms to prevent the spread of STDs.
• Radicals on the left believe all social problems come about because some category of people has power over another. Feminist theory and queer theory highlight how closely sexuality is tied to various dimensions of social inequality.
