A couple wants to have a child but they are concerned that that child might have cystic fibrosis. After

taking a family history, you determine that neither of the two people have the disease, but one of them
(the female) had a sister with cystic fibrosis and the other (the male) had a dad with it. What do you
tell them?

What will be an ideal response?

The male must be a carrier since he is not sick, but his father had the disease and had to give him the
recessive allele. The female has a sister with the disease which means both her parents are carriers.
The likelihood that she is also a carrier then is 2/3. If both she and her partner are carriers, the chance
of having a child with cystic fibrosis is 1/4 times the woman’s 2/3 chance of being a carrier, or 2/12
(1/6).

Animals that maintain body fluid solute concentrations that are higher than that of the external environment and animals that maintain body fluid solute concentrations that are lower than that of the external environment are both considered to be osmoregulators.
