What are the advantages and disadvantages of chronic villus sampling (CVS) in comparison to amniocentesis? Why would one conduct CVS or amniocentesis following one of the non-invasive blood tests done on the mother?
What will be an ideal response?
The results of CVS can be made available within a few days, which might make it easier both legally and medically to have an abortion. Additionally, some birth defects may be prevented if they are caught early enough. However, with CVS there is a slightly greater chance of causing a miscarriage than is associated with amniocentesis. Due to the fact that the maternal blood testing has a high rate of false positives, if the blood test on the mother indicated a genetic abnormality, it would need to be confirmed by one of the other tests.
