Responding officers should also establish the severity of the assault by taking photographs and describing all injuries in their notes. The size, location, number, color, depth, and amount of bleeding of any injuries must also be carefully described. Some bruises do not become visible for several hours or even days, so assault victims should also be advised that additional photographs will need to be taken later. An oral or written statement should be obtained from qualified medical personnel regarding the severity and permanence of the injuries and any impairment of bodily functioning.
