Scientists estimate the toxicity of a chemical by determining the effects of various doses of the chemical on test organisms and plotting the results in a dose-response curve. One approach is to determine the lethal dose. A chemical's median lethal dose (LD50) is the dose that can kill 50% of the animals in a test population within a given time period.
