What is a sample, and what is meant when a sample is said to be representative?

A sample is a portion of a public selected for the purpose of making observations and drawing
conclusions about the public as a whole. A sample is representative of a targeted population when it
is of sufficient size and when every member of the targeted population has an equal chance of being
selected for the sample.
