What is the essential difference between a beveled wood siding with or without a drainage layer?

A beveled wood siding with a drainage layer is fastened to 1/2 in. × 1-1/2 in. vertical wood strips that are nailed to each stud. The strips form an air space behind the siding, called the drainage layer. Wood siding without the drainage layer does not have vertical strips.
