Discuss the importance of serial endosymbiosis, both primary and secondary, in the protists. What will be an ideal response?

Concepts to Consider: Mitochondria and chloroplasts originated from endosymbionts. Primary
endosymbiosis was responsible for the chloroplasts of red algae, green algae, and land plants.
Secondary endosymbiosis was responsible for the chloroplasts of euglenoids, dinoflagellates, diatoms,
golden algae, and brown algae (and apicomplexans have related nonfunctional chloroplasts). Certain
dinoflagellates and green algae are endosymbionts of invertebrates. Forams contain algal
endosymbionts.
