What is the process for summoning jurors? What constitutional limitations have been established for this process?

Fill in the blank(s) with the appropriate word(s).

Potential jurors are summoned to court using master jury lists, generally compiled from voter registration lists. The people summoned are called the venire. The people in the venire participate in voir dire, the process designed to select a fair and impartial jury by asking members of the venire about potential biases related to the case. Potential jurors who cannot be impartial and fair are excused for cause. Other members of the venire may be excused by either party by peremptory challenges as long as they are not used in a discriminatory manner that violates the constitutional guarantee of equal protection.
