Explain the effects of composition, pressure, and temperature on rock strength

What will be an ideal response?


Different compositions have different rock strengths. For example, quartzite, granite, and quartz-cemented sandstone have higher strength than shale, mudstone, and rock salt. An increase in pressure results in an increase in rock strength. An increase in temperature and water content results in a decrease in rock strength.
