Drugs/Narcotics/Alcohol: By far, the most lethal combination used in most suicidal, accidental, and homicidal deaths involves popular prescription and street drugs used alone or with alcohol. Arsenic: A common ingredient in insecticides, arsenic can cause instant death with a single concentrated dosage, or prolonged death with numerous small doses over time. Predeath symptoms include headaches; nausea; vomiting; numbness in the arms, hands, and feet; and delusional thoughts and hallucinations. Cyanide: Generally found in insecticides, this substance produces predeath symptoms similar to those of suffocation—shortness of breath, dizziness, and confusion. In about 60 percent of cases, the victim's breath smells like bitter almonds.
Thallium: Most often found in rat poison, thallium produces a general failure of the vital organs and nervous system. Predeath symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and temporary hair loss. Aconitine: Used as a main ingredient in rat poison and in ancient Chinese medicines. Predeath symptoms are similar to those of a major heart attack—chest pains, numbness in the shoulder/left extremity, and irregular heartbeat. Atropine: Commonly used in liquid form by eye doctors to dilate pupils for an eye examination, and known to be used by Native Americans as a medicine. Predeath symptoms resemble those of alcohol intoxication—loss of balance, double vision, staggering, and loss of consciousness. Ricin: A popular terrorist poison, ricin most commonly is a white powder, but can be administered as a mist or in pill form. Predeath symptoms include difficulty breathing, coughing, heavy sweating, and a bluish color in the skin.
