Define gentrification and discuss the pros and cons associated with it.

What will be an ideal response?

Vary. Gentrification is the process of neighborhood revitalization typically resulting in the replacement of lower-income residents with higher-income residents. Gentrification tends to put pressure on the poor, elderly, and minorities. Property values go up in gentrified areas and the poor can no longer afford housing (and the services that come into gentrified neighborhoods tend to be more expensive). In a study of adults who lived in gentrifying New York City neighborhoods, Sungwoo Lim et al. (2017) concluded that residents who moved to non-gentrifying, poor neighborhoods had a greater number of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and mental health-related visits for about five years after displacement. The researchers hypothesize that "it is likely that the inability to return to one's community and loss of social networks may have an…impact on mental health."
