Explain mandatory minimum terms of incarceration and the types of crimes that fall under these offenses.

What will be an ideal response?

For some offenses, a prison sentence is not simply an option; it is required. All jurisdictions in the United States now have laws that prescribe mandatory minimum terms of incarceration for selected crimes. Almost all states have mandatory sentences for repeat or habitual offenders and for crimes involving possession or use of a deadly weapon. Most states also require minimum prison sentences for certain types of drug offenses: trafficking, selling drugs to minors, or selling drugs within 1,000 feet of a school.
