Can learning disorders be diagnosed in the presence of mental retardation?
What will be an ideal response?
Learning disorders are diagnosed when the person’s achievement on standardized tests in reading, mathematics, or written expression is substantially below that expected which is expected for age, schooling, and level of intelligence (APA, 2013). Typically a two-standard deviation discrepancy between IQ and testing in reading, math, and written expression is required, although smaller discrepancies are sometimes used. For Josie, results of individually administered, standardized tests in math, reading, and written expression placed her in the first percentile for her age, which is significantly lower than was expected for her IQ.
