First provide a definition of an index or scale. Your book discussed ways in which indexes can be used in the development of research questions and their measurements. Identify at least two reasons why a multi-item index would be useful to improve validity and two reasons why it would useful to improve reliability.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary slightly. An index refers to the sum or average of responses to a set of questions about a concept. One reason why it would be useful to improve validity is that it can allow for a concept to contain all measures related to it. It would also able to improve validity by being able to compare measures to make sure that each measure is valid in measuring the same concept. It would improve reliability because, for example, interitem reliability is about whether or not the measures that are used for a concept are significantly associated with each other. The higher the association, the more reliable the measure. An index is used in establishing alternative-forms reliability. This means that researchers may modify the wording in an index and then readminister the same index to make sure those items in the index are reliable.
