Despite everything we know about the impacts to our environment by things like deforestation, toxic chemicals, and dumping, these issues persist around the globe. Why is there still so much left to be done in terms of protecting the environment and preventing illness from contaminated resources? In other words, what are the challenges to implementing sound, effective, and easily implementable international environmental policy?
What will be an ideal response?
Students should address how a lack of harmonization exists in defining what environmental issues are, where and if they exist, how they should be defined, and how they should be addressed. International agreements are difficult to enforce without collective agreement on what should be the rules and regulations. Differing levels of resources and motivations impact participation from individual nations as well. Need also drives environmental degradation—without addressing poverty, environmental issues will continue to persist. Ability to replace products/services with green alternatives is also a challenge. Students may also examine consumer patterns and behaviors and economic systems that drive poor environmental practices.
