True sciencing (that which scientists and social scientists do) is cyclic rather than linear. Teaching the steps to the scientific method can result in students acquiring a misconception that there is a starting point and an end point, and that the final answer is exactly that—final. Dogmatic teaching such as that is lethal to authentic learning. In fact, the starting point in true inquiry (and, therefore, in true sciencing) can occur at any point in the inquiry cycle, wherever a discrepancy is recognized. The "final" conclusion, then, is tentative based on the data collected.
