Describe the limitations of developmental theories as they inform counselors working with older adults.
What will be an ideal response?
One limitation of many developmental theories is that they tend to focus on aging as only a time of loss. An alternative view is that aging is that it is potentially a time of both positive and negative transitions and transformations. With this broader perspective, counselors can approach older adult clients differently, from a transformational rather than declining perspective as a foundation for understanding later life. This approach takes age into consideration as part of the lifespan but not as major factor that could turn into a negative outcome for both counselor and client. The focus instead can be in understanding the individual and his or hers needs.
