Europe's open door attitudes and policies are changing, especially because of growing unemployment at home and the fallout from surging numbers of illegal immigrants. European views of immigrants shifted markedly when the global economic crisis struck Europe in 2007 . Most Europeans since than have seen immigrants as a financial burden on society and as competing with them for jobs and benefits; immigrants threaten to unravel the social safety net of the European welfare state, and they live outside of mainstream European society instead of becoming integrated within it.
