A few planters shaped the political and economic life of the whole South. Slavery was a part of all of the South's institutions and affected "the personal interests of every white man."

Most Southern whites were not planters but yeoman farmers who owned no slaves. The yeomanry helped to catch runaway slaves and guard against slave insurrection.
