• Offer teachers a convenient package of materials, techniques, and assessment devices Provide plans plan for orchestrating all components of a literacy program
• Offer a gradually increasing level of difficulty, emergent through sixth-grade reading levels
• Offer varied reading selections and an abundance of practice material and enrichment activities
• Have recently added phonics, grammar, oral language, listening, and vocabulary components
• Are increasingly addressing issues faced by ELLs
Disadvantages of basals:
• Focus on the traditional three-part core—anthology, workbook, and teacher?s manual
• Have a broad organizational pattern that does not meet needs of struggling students
• Present core selections to an entire class designed for an average student
• May not interest all students, and may be too regimented and standardized
• Contain excerpts from books rather than encouraging the reading of whole books
• May encourage overteaching or spending too much time on one selection
