The energy balance is the ratio of fossil-fuel energy used to make the fuel (energy
input), and the energy in the fuel (energy output). If an alternative fuel has an energy
balance of less than one, it is not a viable fuel since more than one unit of fossil fuel
energy has been used to make one unit of alternative energy.
